Random Letter Generator
Spin once and get a letter from A to Z. This random letter generator gives all 26 letters the same chance, 3.85% each.
Your browser's secure random tool makes the choice before the wheel moves.
How to Use the Random Letter Generator
- Press spin on the tool above.
- The letter the wheel stops on is your pick.
- Spin again for a new letter. Every spin is separate, so the same letter can come up twice.
Tick "Vowels only" or "Consonants only" under the wheel to narrow it down. Type letters into "Exclude letters" to take them off the wheel.
What Do People Use a Random Letter For?
Most uses come down to "I need a starting point".
Word games. Name a country, animal or food that starts with the letter. Category games need a new letter every round.
Spelling and phonics. Spin for a letter, then say its sound or a word that starts with it. This works well for early readers.
Party and car games. Play alphabet games or "I spy". Say a word that starts with the letter before the timer ends.
Writing prompts. Write a sentence where every word starts with the same letter.
Turn order. Give each person a letter and spin to see who goes first.
Names and projects. Pick a first letter, then brainstorm names. For matching nouns, try the random object generator.
A, B, C or D? Pick One at Random
Sometimes you only want four letters. It might be a quiz night guess, a choose your own ending game or a small decision. Use "Exclude letters" to take off the letters you do not want. Or use the 1 to 4 wheel and count 1 as A, 2 as B, 3 as C and 4 as D.
This is for games and practice rounds. It will not help you with a real test.
Random Letter of the Alphabet Generator: The Odds
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Any one letter on a single spin | 1 in 26 (about 3.8%) |
| One of the vowels A, E, I, O, U | 5 in 26 (about 19%) |
| One of the hard letters Q, X or Z | 3 in 26 (about 11.5%) |
| The same letter twice in a row | about 3.8% |
| Spins until a repeat is more likely than not | 7 |
Two things catch people out.
First, Q, X and Z come up as often as any other letter. The wheel does not know which letters are hard for word games. Many families add a house rule: re-spin if it is Q, X or Z. Or use "Exclude letters" to remove them. Decide before the game starts.
Second, an even pick is not the same as how often letters appear in real English. In real text, E is far more common than J. If you want letters that feel like English, this is not the tool. If you want fairness, it is.
Random Letter and Number Generator: Pairs Like A7
Need something like A7, C3 or F10? That is a random letter and number generator, and you can make it with two spins. Spin a letter on this page. Then spin a number on the random number wheel or on 1 to 10. It is good for grid games and classroom coordinates.
Random Alphabet Generator: No Repeats
A random alphabet generator that does not repeat letters is easy. Spin once for each letter you need, and turn on elimination mode. Each winner is removed from the wheel, so it cannot come up again.
How the Pick Is Made
Your browser's secure random tool picks the letter first. It uses a method that avoids a small bias that simple shortcuts cause. Then the wheel turns and lands on that letter. Speed and timing cannot change the result. It is the same engine as the home wheel.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the random letter generator really random?
Yes. It uses your browser's secure random tool, not a fixed formula. Each letter has the same chance.
Can I spin without repeating letters?
Yes. Turn on elimination mode. Each winner is removed from the wheel, so it cannot come up again.
Can it work as a random letter generator wheel in class?
Yes. Show the wheel on a shared screen so everyone sees the spin. It works for phonics, spelling bees and turns.
Can I get only vowels or only consonants?
Yes. Tick "Vowels only" or "Consonants only" under the wheel. You can also type letters into "Exclude letters" to take them off.
Is it free? Does it work on a phone?
Yes to both. It is free, with no account, and it fits phone screens.
