Random Team Generator

Paste in your names, choose how many teams you need, and get fair teams in one go. This random team generator shuffles your list with your browser's secure random tool.

Nobody picks, nobody gets picked last, and nobody can say it was rigged.

How to Make Random Teams

  1. Add your names. One per line.
  2. Choose the number of teams.
  3. Press Make teams. The names are shuffled and split.
  4. Press it again to re-draw. Each draw is new and separate.

What If the Numbers Don't Divide Evenly?

14 people in 4 teams does not divide cleanly. You get two teams of 4 and two teams of 3. That is the fairest result possible. Team sizes never differ by more than one person.

A team of 3 against a team of 4 is a size gap, not a skill gap. If it feels uneven, agree a fix first. For example, give the smaller team a one point head start, or let one player sit out in turn.

Team Generator: Random Does Not Mean Balanced

Random gives everyone an equal chance. It does not give every team equal skill. Five strong players can land on one team. That is a normal result of a fair shuffle.

If skill matters, use the tier method:

  1. Sort your names into groups: strongest, middle, newest.
  2. Run the generator once for each group, with the same number of teams.
  3. Join the first team from each run, then the second, and so on.

Each team gets a similar mix, and the draw inside each group is still random. If skill does not matter, such as class groups and casual games, plain random is the right choice.

Random Group Generator for Classrooms and Work

A random group generator solves problems that picking by hand cannot.

Classroom groups. Students stop choosing only their friends, and nobody is chosen last. Re-draw for each project to mix everyone over the term.

Work and workshops. Split a large meeting into discussion groups in seconds.

Sports practice and PE. Make fair sides with no captains picking in front of everyone.

Parties and games. Use it whenever the group cannot agree on sides. Then play Truth or Dare or Would You Rather.

Quiz nights. Make teams for quizzes, relays and board games.

Random Team Picker or Captains?

Captain picks feel traditional, but they are the reason someone always stands there waiting. A random team picker removes that moment. If you still want a captain for each team, pick them first with draw names. Then shuffle everyone else into teams.

Random Team Name Generator: Ideas for Your Teams

Once you have teams, they need names. A good pattern is adjective + animal or object. Here are some to start with:

  • Speedy Otters
  • Midnight Waffles
  • Brave Pineapples
  • Thunder Pandas
  • Quiet Rockets
  • Lucky Lanterns

Can't pick? Use the random object generator for the noun and the random letter generator for the first letter.

Fairness Across Several Rounds

If you re-draw every round, the same two people may land together twice. That is what random looks like. The generator has no memory of past rounds. To avoid repeats, keep a note of who played with whom, or draw again until the pairs change.

Team Randomizer Generator: Is My List Private?

Yes. Nothing about your list is sent anywhere. The list is also saved in this browser's local storage, so it is there next time. The teams you make are not saved.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the random team generator keep teams fair?

It shuffles your list with your browser's secure random tool, then splits it. Every person has the same chance to land on any team.

Can I make teams with names, not numbers?

Yes. Add real names and you see who is on each team. It is a quick random team generator with names for a class or club.

How many teams can I make?

As many as you have people for, up to 500 names. If you ask for more teams than people, the tool tells you.

Can I stop two people being on the same team?

Not with this tool. Draw again until it works, or place those two by hand before you shuffle everyone else.

Can I save or copy the teams?

Copy them from the screen before you leave the page. The tool does not save the teams you make.

Is it free? Does it work on a phone?

Yes to both. It is free, with no account, and it fits phone screens.
